"The Wrestler" is about a man who can do one thing well, and keeps on doing it because of need, weary skill and pride. I cared as deeply about Randy the Ram as any movie character I've seen this year. I cared about Mickey Rourke, too.

Besides a very good performance by the beautiful Marisa Tomei, "The Wrestler" is also worth mentioning because it marks the first time Darren Aronofsky has made a straight forward. Mickey Rourke finally caught a big break by landing this role. Rourke gives "The Wrestler" a genuine feel -- from the muscles on top of muscles to the trips to the tanning booth.

Aging wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson is long past his prime but still ready and rarin' to go on the pro-wrestling circuit. After a particularly brutal beating, however, Randy hangs up his tights, pursues a serious relationship with a long-in-the-tooth stripper, and tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

The Wrestler is like "Rocky" made by the Scorsese of "Mean Streets." It's the rare movie fairy tale that's also a bravura work of art. Mostly though, the movie feeds off Rourke, who plays a genuinely decent guy who never lets his dawning self-awareness interfere with his responsibility to give the fans. Reviewing movies I absolutely love is always difficult for me. I can either take steps to sound extremely profound or I can just slather them with meaningless Watching The Wrestler you feel as if you get to take a piece of Randy home with you.
